Builder’s Tips

For framing outdoor projects like sunrooms, greenhouses, or patios, we love using cedar or aluminum. Cedar is strong, handles the weather well, and takes stain beautifully. We use tight-knot and clear cedar for a sturdy, polished look. Make sure your material is as straight as possible, and the ‘crown’ is facing upward and outward as you build. Aluminum bar caps, especially in brown, add a sleek finish with a rubber gasket to keep polycarbonate panels secure, even in high winds.

To secure the polycarbonate panels, the Aluminum Bar Cap has a sleek sliding cover that neatly hides the screws, giving your project a smooth, polished look. And for joining panels, the Joiner Cap is a go-to tool, making it easy to connect panels securely to your framing.

To prevent bowing or movement, screw the bar cap to the framing. For thicker polycarbonate (16mm or more), you’ll get a more rigid structure and it will have less movement. Don’t forget to protect the open edges of the panels with End Caps or Breathable Tape to keep insects and debris out. There’s a range of profiles available to make joining panels and finishing edges easy.

Big or small, polycarbonate makes it simple to bring your vision to life. Whether it’s a sunroom, greenhouse, or a covered porch, The Polycarbonate Store is here to make building easy!
